The Trade:
The nuclear power industry in America is a complex and highly regulated industry that produces a significant portion of the nation's electricity. It is the largest source of carbon-free electricity in the United States, providing about 20 percent of the nation's electricity. Nuclear power plants use uranium fuel to generate electricity through a process called fission. This process splits atoms of uranium, releasing energy that is converted into electricity.
The United States has the largest number of nuclear power plants in the world, with 99 plants in operation. These plants are located in 30 states and generate a total of about 100,000 megawatts of electricity. The United States is the world's largest producer of nuclear energy, accounting for about 30 percent of the world's total nuclear energy production.
